After-school sessions at Newbury Study Hall run on weekday afternoons during local school term times, immediately after pupils finish at their own school.
How it works
- Weekdays, 16:30–18:00
- 1.5 hours of tuition per session
- Fifteen hours per subject per ten-week term
- Small groups of 3–4 (max 8)
- £600 per subject per term (£40 per hour)
- One subject one day a week, or several subjects on different days
Who it suits
- Pupils for whom regular weekly support during term time is more useful than occasional intensive blocks
- Pupils building strong subject foundations across the two years of GCSE or A-level
- Pupils whose families want the structure of a fixed weekly commitment
Joining
Pupils may join at the start of any half term, or at any other point where space is available.
Why small-group tutorials?
Regular tutorial hours appear alongside normal lessons on the timetables of many better schools and universities. They are effective in their own right, and extra tuition in a single subject can further refine how students engage with their studies more broadly.
Method
OISE masterclass tuition combines remedial and proactive tutoring: catch-up & get-ahead approaches. Students do not simply revise what they have already seen at school; they begin new topics & exam practice early to stay ahead of their lessons and classmates.
Tutoring is highly adaptive and depends on the actual students present, responding to their needs on a lesson-by-lesson basis. At times they all work together on a topic, and at others follow distinct pathways. Tutors rigorously adhere to the exam syllabus, but do not follow a prescribed programme in the same way as large school classes might.
Homework is preparation for the next class, not just follow-up tasks. An hour’s prep is given for each hour of lesson time.
Targets
Taken intensively, students should target a grade or more of improvement per term depending on attitude. Ideally, however, masterclasses should run alongside normal school over the long term.
Students attending for the full two years of a GCSE or A-level programme should expect to be targeting top grades by exam time.
